Car hire & Bwindi Gorilla Trekking from Kigali

Why go from Kigali?

Kigali’s airport is the easiest entry point for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwest Uganda. The park’s southern sectors are only about 4 to 7 hours away by road, depending on the sector, which is often quicker than flying to Entebbe and driving or flying on. The trade-off is that you cross an international border, so the vehicle arrangements matter.

Self-Drive Safaris from Kigali

Book your self-drive safari from Kigali with ease, with the option to cross into Uganda via either the Katuna or Cyanika border post. We are highly flexible with cross-border itineraries, which often provide a more cost-effective route for gorilla trekking safaris.

You can reserve your gorilla permit directly through us and collect it when you pick up your rental vehicle. We make cross-border travel seamless for every client: all our vehicles come with both local insurance and COMESA insurance, giving you full coverage throughout East Africa.

The permit

Trekking in Uganda requires a Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) permit covering park entry, an armed ranger-guided trek and a one-hour gorilla visit. It costs $800 for foreign non-residents and $700 for foreign residents; non-residents must book through licensed Ugandan tour operators. Rest-of-Africa residents pay $500, and East African citizens pay UGX 300,000. Discounted low-season permits (April, May, November) cost $600 and $500 respectively. Rwanda’s permit is $1,500.

Since March 2026, permits must be paid in full at booking, and standby permits are no longer sold. Book early for June to September and December to February. Permits are sector-specific, so your lodge should be in the same sector. Tariffs change, so confirm with your operator or UWA.

Choosing a sector
Bwindi has four main sectors:

  • Rushaga and Nkuringo (south): Closest to Kigali, about 5 to 6 hours via Cyanika and Kisoro. Rushaga has the most gorilla families.
  • Ruhija (east): About 5 to 6 hours via Gatuna/Katuna and Kabale, on a scenic, winding road.
  • Buhoma (north): Around 8 hours or more, so better for longer itineraries.

For a short trip, choose Rushaga or Ruhija.

4x4 Camping and Gorilla Trekking

Where to hire. Kigali has many local operators. We at Kigali Car Rentals stand up hold for cross-border trips. (COMESA third-party insurance and border permits) are all availed. Cost. Expect roughly $100 to $130 per day for a 4×4 with driver, with fuel often extra or bundled by distance. These are ballpark figures that vary by season. So get written quotes. Shared among a group, transport is modest. A solo traveller carries the whole cost.

The trek itself

Groups are small, with a limit of eight visitors per gorilla family. Treks start with a ranger briefing, then last from 1 to 6 hours or more depending on where the gorillas went overnight. You get one hour with them. The terrain is steep, humid and often muddy.

Pack: Waterproof hiking boots, long trousers and sleeves, gardening gloves, a rain jacket, insect repellent and a daypack. Porters are available for a fee and are worth hiring. They support local communities and help on steep sections.

Rules: Stay about 7 metres from the gorillas. Anyone who is ill, particularly with a cold or flu, may be refused, because gorillas are susceptible to human respiratory diseases. Rangers have the final say.

Budget at a glance (per person, two sharing)

  • Permit: $800 ($600 in low season)
  • Transport share: $150 to $300 over three days
  • Lodging: $100 to $600+ per night depending on tier
  • Tips, porter and extras: $50 to $100

A realistic total runs from around $1,300 on a tight budget to well over $2,500 at the luxury end.

Where to Stay in Bwindi

Basic Safari Lodges

Mid-range lodges in Bwindi range from $70 to $150 per night. They are conveniently located close to the national park and offer excellent facilities. All four sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park have accommodation of this standard, so you will always find a suitable lodge for your overnight stay before your gorilla trekking adventure.

Budget Options

Budget lodges near Bwindi cluster around Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo, and location matters more than comfort. Pick the one closest to your assigned gorilla-trekking trailhead, since permits are allocated by sector and roads are slow and winding. Budget options like community-run bandas or guesthouses typically offer basic rooms, hot water on request, and warm local meals, often for a fraction of luxury prices. Book early, since cheaper beds fill quickly in peak trekking months.
