Akagera National Park covers 1,122 km² along Rwanda’s eastern border with Tanzania, making it the largest protected wetland in Eastern and Central Africa. The park is named after the Kagera River, which traces its eastern boundary before feeding into Lake Ihema and a chain of smaller lakes

The park is home to 58 mammal species — totalling over 8,000 individuals — as well as more than 500 bird species, making it one of Africa’s most biodiverse destinations.
