For Akagera and Nyungwe, a 4x4 self drive car like the Land Cruiser or Fortuner is strongly recommended. Akagera's internal tracks are unpaved and can be muddy. A saloon car self drive is fine for tarmac routes to Musanze and Lake Kivu.
A valid driving licence from your home country is accepted for rentals up to 90 days. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended for non-English licences but not always mandatory. East African licences are fully accepted across Rwanda.
